Along with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the new bluetooth AirPods were one of the first of Apple’s newest innovations to receive criticism this year. Perhaps, when Apple fans learned about the new features of the iPhone 7, they expected something great to replace their longtime companion, the headphone jack (now that it no longer exists).
Rumors of new wireless bluetooth speakers had already spread long before their debut, and expectations were high. When fans saw that the highly anticipated new product looked exactly the same as the free earpods that came with previous iPhone models (just without the wires), many were not pleased. Perhaps it was the hefty $159 price tag that was do displeasing to many, or the 5-hour battery life. Regardless, we have yet to see whether people will buy the new AirPods until they are released this October.
As the release date draws closer, more and more Apple fans are starting to wonder, are the AirPods worth the price? Let’s compare them to other popular earbuds on the market.
Samsung Gear IconX Earbuds
Priced at $199, the Gear IconX earbuds are built for more than just listening to music. You can also track your fitness activity with the Samsung Gear app. It comes with multiple touch- activated features, such as playing, pausing and skipping tracks, as well as controlling volume by using the touchpad while listening to music. These also double as a standalone MP3 player with 4GB of storage.
These are all amazing features, but many are unhappy with the battery life of these earbuds. On a full charge, the IconX earbuds can only last up to 3 hours. Also, some are unsatisfied with the sound quality. Overall, if these 2 attributes are of great importance to you, then AirPods may be a better option.
BeatsX Wireless Earphones
Unlike most, the BeatsX earphones come with up to 8 hours of battery life per charge. That’s not the best part, though; BeatsX FastFuel charging allows for 2 hours of battery life with only 5 minutes of charging. What’s more, Apple-owned BeatsX feature Siri compatibility and RemoteTalk, allowing you to answer calls with the built-in microphone. Of course, these earphones are built with the same Beats sounds quality so many people love.
Priced at $149, BeatsX earphones may be a better option over AirPods. If you’re a diehard fan of Apple products, you won’t have to feel guilty about buying these instead of AirPods.
Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones
Bose is known for producing products with quality sound, so make no mistake that your music will sound clean and crisp with the SoundSport wireless headphones. These earbuds come with up to 6 hours of battery life per charge and are sweat proof and noise-reducing. Similar to the BeatsX headphones, these are priced at $149. If sound quality isn’t enough for you to buy these headphones over AirPods, the design and price should do the convincing for you.
Final Verdict on AirPods
Overall, AirPods aren’t the best earbuds on the market, but they’re still worth it. Sure, you may be better off buying Bose or Beats earbuds for longer battery life and slightly lower price, but if you’re an avid Apple fan, you’ll get the most ease of use when pairing with your Apple Watch or Mac. Here’s why AirPods are worth it:
- -No more tangled wires - save yourself time and frustration with no wires to untangle
- -5-hour battery life - although 5 hours is not amazing, it’s better than some
- -Reasonably priced - $159 may sound like a lot, but it’s not when compared to others
- -Double-tap Siri activation - you no longer have to use your iPhone to activate Siri
- -Built-in microphone - save yourself from a traffic ticket with hands-free calling
- -Auto-pairing capability - easily switch usage to other Apple products (e.g. Apple Watch)
- -Portable charger - the portable charger doubles as a carrying case for your AirPods
